Rustic Wedding Ideas

At Buttai Barn, we love weddings of all varieties. However, our stunning locale and country barn make us slightly more partial to the rustic-themed kind. Not only is it a popular concept right now, but rustic weddings can also be beautifully simple and affordable.

If you’re planning a rustic wedding and doing some DIY to save on the big-day budget, we’ve come across plenty of ideas for you, from table decorations, to cake styles and wedding favours. Here are 10 of our favourite ideas for making your wedding rustic and elegant.

  1. Use succulents to hold your place cards!

We love this one on Etsy from Jen Simpson Design. While the example in the image is picture perfect, this idea leaves plenty of room for personal creativity. You could potentially choose any pot colour or succulent type to add to the flag card to suit your individual style.

2. Ladder lighting display

Add some warmth and country ambiance to your special day with a display like this one. This particular set up we found on Elegant Wedding Invites, however, it wouldn’t be hard to design your own. You can find vintage step ladders in op-shops, on Gumtree or on eBay, then decorate with fairy lights, baby’s breath (or flowers of your own choosing) and mason jars with tea lights. Simple, country and super romantic.

3. Pegged photo display

Many couples choose to have a photos of their lives together up until the point of marriage on exhibition, or scattered throughout the venue. A new trend that still fits perfectly within the rustic theme is the pegged display. Easy, quick and inexpensive, this is a DIY hack even a beginner can nail. All you need is string, an assortment of amazing photos and some little wooden pegs (which you can pick up at Big W or a variety of other stores). This blog had the perfect example of a simple, rustic photographic journey.

4. Multi-purpose favours

There’s nothing better than killing two birds with one stone…. Metaphorically, of course. Everyone loves a mason jar, rustic and good for many things, consider providing your guests with their own to use for beverages over the evening, and to take home as a keepsake. We like the idea, as well as the chalkboard explanation in the example below. From Etsy, to Target and quite a few other online retailers, mason jars aren’t hard to come by and if you purchase in bulk, affordable as well.

5. Wine bottles as table numbers

We love wine and we love recycling, so this is a fun project for you. If you’ve got a few tables at your reception and want to number them for seating arrangements, start saving your empty bottles now. Wine bottles can be sprayed to match your wedding colours and theme, and then you add the number. You can use a wooden placard such as in the example below, just draw it on yourself with texta or paint, or use a paper/card. Attach with string and you have a pretty table decoration/number.

7. Wood slab cake holder

Trees should always be part of country weddings, and you can even incorporate them in to your cake presentation. Wooden slabs make the most gorgeous, rustic cake holding option. The example below courtesy of Etsy, also displays semi-naked cake which is also suited to the modern trend of rustic wedding planning. You can order your wood slab on Etsy, or they can also be purchased from My Sweet Event, other online retailers and you can even find some on Gumtree.
